The St. Petersburg stadium was built in place of the Kirov Stadium which opened here on July 30, 1950.
A design for the stadium by architect Kisho Kurokawa was selected in 2006. The football field remained unchanged from the previous arena. The ticket office buildings and monument to Sergey Kirov were preserved.
The stadium is home to FC Zenit and is the country’s most visited football venue.
